Who has 100% job security? Whether you own your own business or work for someone else, your job can change at a moment’s notice. People will tell you that “job security” is a myth. Well, I believe that it isn’t fully secure, but there are things you can do to make it a bit more failsafe. What I would like to show you over the next few minutes is how you can increase your job security by using the internet. It is a simple task to do and the benefits will result in you feeling more comfortable about your situation.
First, let us look at the definition of job security. If you own your own business, job security can be defined as having enough work for you to meet your bills and live comfortably. If you work for someone else, then you might define job security as a level of your importance to your company. If they can’t do without you – they won’t. The internet can make this happen for both the owner and the worker. Let me explain how this can be done.
In the old days of the internet – around 1989 – the internet was just proving itself to be a valuable marketing tool. It was at this time that you could start adding pictures to your web pages. Before that, only text could be used. Suddenly, your business could have their logo on their web site. Products they sold could be on the site, as well. What made this so fascinating was another company that made a debut in the same year – AOL. AOL brought the average guy to the internet. The World Wide Web was no longer a place for the computer geek or the college professor. It became a safe haven for millions of normal folks and they were being paired up with businesses.
Let’s fast forward a few years to 1999. In this year, the internet boom was really going. It was the time of Amazon and Google. It was a time when eCommerce really started up for smaller companies. Prior to this, if you wanted to sell products online, it was a big hassle. Only larger companies did it. Now it was available to almost everyone. Tie this in with search engines like Google, that started only a year before, and businesses were starting to compete to see who could be seen first online.
Finally, let’s move to now. The internet has changed in the past couple of years. Information isn’t just thrown at you. You decide how you receive business. We’ve learned that we don’t have to sit idly by while we are advertised to…we can converse with the business, tell others how we’ve been treated, and recommend a company to others. Our world is filled with words like Facebook, mySpace, Twitter, Wiki, and Blog. The term Web 2.0 is thrown around a lot to describe this phenomenon. And therein lies your job security.
How can a web site lead to your job security? Why not start with a blog? Why isn’t a blog your web site? What is a blog? If some of you are thinking that it is an online diary, you are only partially right. A blog is a means of communicating with your customers. It is a way for you to inform people about specials and news to your specific industry. It is a location for you to post documents that your customers may use. It’s a vehicle for people to write you a testimonial. It is a forum to explain why your customers should be shopping at your store or business!
“But Jimm, I am not a computer person and I don’t even know what to write.” OK, don’t write anything. There is a thing called a “pingback” which allows you to copy a link from someone else’s site and post it on your blog.
Why do blogs work so great as a web site? Because once they are up, you can change them yourself. You don’t have to wait for someone to fix your phone number or the price on an item. You can do it in seconds…what’s more, every time you make a change to your blog, it sends out a beacon to the internet world and lets them know that something is different here.
It isn’t easy work. You have to be dedicated to adding content. It is shown more than 95% of people who blog on a daily basis are successful enough to make a living at their blog (let alone their business). However, less than 1% of all web site owners add content every day. You have to keep coming up with new stuff if you want to be successful doing a blog. But waitaminute! You aren’t a blogger, you’re a business owner! You just want your job security.
Well, the blog is for you, too. Here are some examples: I have a web site in a small town. I used to have a regular HTML web site, like most people do. I am an internet marketer and the most people I ever got to my web site were about twenty-five people in a month. I decided to turn my web site into a blog one weekend. I had the site pretty well done in about 12 hours and launched it on Sunday night. It’s been up for 3 weeks now and I have had over 180 visitors come my web site! The results are the same for other companies I have done this for, as well. By posting about a dozen articles – whether their own or from others – they are seeing a significant increase in business coming to their sites. In fact, I started a blog on May 26th of last year. To date, we’ve had over 150,000 page views.
And that’s how you increase your job security. The more people that know about your business, the more business you will get. If you work for someone else, go to your boss and let them know you want to start a blog. When more people start coming through the door, you will increase your worth with the company.
If you have any questions on what a blog can do for you, shoot me an email and I’ll gladly give you a list on how to increase your job security and your peace of mind.
